Comparison Grammar

1. Comparative (Comparing 2)

Formula: Adjective + er + THAN

John is smarter than Sarah.
Summer is hotter than winter.

For Long Words (2+ Syllables): MORE + Adjective + THAN

This car is more expensive than that one.
She is more polite than him.

2. Superlative (The #1)

Formula: THE + Adjective + est

John is the smartest student.
This is the oldest building.

For Long Words: THE MOST + Adjective

It is the most difficult test.
He is the most popular actor.

3. Irregular Adjectives (Memorize!)

The Mechanics: Spelling Rules

1. The "Y" Rule

If ends in Consonant + Y: Cut 'Y', add -ier / -iest.

  • Happy → Happier → Happiest
  • Busy → Busier → Busiest
  • Easy → Easier → Easiest

2. The "Big Mac" Rule (C-V-C)

1 Syllable, Consonant-Vowel-Consonant: Double the last letter.

  • Big → Bigger → Biggest
  • Hot → Hotter → Hottest
  • Fat → Fatter → Fattest

3. The "E" Rule

If ends in E: Just add -r / -st.

  • Nice → Nicer (Not niceer) → Nicest
  • Late → Later → Latest
