🇬🇧 Great Britain & The United Kingdom

Many people confuse "England", "Great Britain", and "The UK". The UK is made of four countries: England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. "Great Britain" is the island with England, Scotland, and Wales.

The Monarchy
The UK is a constitutional monarchy. The King or Queen is the head of state, but Parliament makes the laws. Today the King is Charles III.

The British Empire
At one time, the British Empire was the largest in history. It covered about 25% of the world. This is why English is spoken in so many countries today.

The Magna Carta (1215)
One of the most important documents in history. It said that even the King must follow the law. It was signed in England over 800 years ago.

An Island Nation
Great Britain is an island. The sea separates it from France (just 33 km!) and from Ireland. There is a tunnel under the sea called the Channel Tunnel, or "Chunnel".

Currency: The Pound
The UK uses the Pound Sterling (£). It is not in the European Union and does not use the Euro.

The Climate
The weather changes very quickly. It rains often all year. British people always carry an umbrella, and they love talking about the weather!

The Union Jack
The UK flag is called the "Union Jack". It combines the crosses of England (St. George), Scotland (St. Andrew), and Northern Ireland (St. Patrick). Wales is not on the flag.

The BBC
The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) is world-famous. It makes TV shows, radio programmes, and news. It is one of the oldest broadcasters in the world.
Sport
Football (soccer), cricket, and tennis (Wimbledon) are the most popular sports. The UK invented many sports that the whole world plays today.

England is the largest country in the UK. The capital is London. England has about 56 million people — the most of all four countries.

A mysterious circle of giant stones built over 4,000 years ago. Nobody knows exactly why or how they moved the stones — many are heavier than a lorry.

Henry VIII and Elizabeth I are the most famous Tudor rulers. They lived in the 1500s and made England a powerful nation. Shakespeare wrote his plays during this time.

In the 1700s and 1800s, England changed the world by inventing factories, steam engines, and railways. This changed how people lived everywhere on Earth.

London is built around the Thames. The river runs through the heart of the city and has many famous bridges, including Tower Bridge.

A beautiful national park in the north of England with mountains, lakes, and green valleys. It is very popular for hiking and outdoor activities.

The capital city has about 9 million people. It is one of the world's most important cities for business, culture, and tourism. Home to Big Ben, the Tower of London, and Buckingham Palace.

At around 4 PM, the English tradition is to drink tea — usually black tea with milk — and eat small sandwiches and cakes. It is a symbol of English life.

The Pub
A "pub" (public house) is a very important part of English social life. People meet friends, eat food, and drink there. Most pubs are very old and have a warm, cosy atmosphere.

Literature
England has produced some of the world's greatest writers: William Shakespeare, Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, and more recently J.K. Rowling (Harry Potter).

England has the world's oldest underground railway. The London Underground opened in 1863.

The English drink about 100 million cups of tea every day. That is more than anyone else in Europe.

Modern football (soccer) was invented in England in the 1800s. The first football club was Sheffield FC, formed in 1857.

Scotland has produced many great inventors. Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone. John Logie Baird invented the television. James Watt improved the steam engine.

The north of Scotland is wild and dramatic — tall mountains, deep valleys, and beautiful lakes called "lochs". Ben Nevis is the tallest mountain in the UK.

Scotland has over 700 islands, though most are very small. The Orkney and Hebrides islands are the most famous and have their own unique culture.

Loch Ness
A very large, deep lake famous worldwide. The legend of the Loch Ness Monster — "Nessie" — attracts tourists from all over the world every year.

Scotland is world-famous for Scotch whisky. It is made from grain and water, then aged in oak barrels. Note the spelling: "whisky" in Scotland, "whiskey" in Ireland and America.

The bagpipe is Scotland's traditional instrument. The kilt — a tartan (coloured pattern) skirt — is the traditional dress for Scottish men, worn at formal events and national celebrations.

Hogmanay
Scottish New Year, called Hogmanay, is a much bigger celebration than Christmas in Scotland. People celebrate with music, fireworks, and "first-footing" — visiting your neighbours after midnight.

The national animal of Scotland is the unicorn — a mythical horse with a horn. It is on the Royal Coat of Arms of Scotland.

Scotland's national flower is the thistle — a prickly plant. The legend says an enemy soldier stepped on one and his cry of pain warned the Scots of an attack.

Wales is a small country to the west of England. The capital is Cardiff. Wales has two official languages: English and Welsh.

Wales has more castles per square mile than any other country in Europe. Over 600 castles were built, many by King Edward I of England in the 1200s to control the Welsh people.

Wales is one of the wettest parts of the UK. The mountains catch rain clouds coming from the Atlantic Ocean. This is why everything is very green!

Rugby union is the national sport of Wales. The Welsh national team plays in red and is one of the strongest teams in the world. Matches at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff are famous for the passionate singing of fans.

The Eisteddfod
An ancient festival of music, poetry, and art. It is held in Welsh and celebrates Welsh language and culture. It has existed for hundreds of years and is one of the biggest cultural festivals in Europe.

Love Spoons
A very old Welsh tradition. Men carved wooden spoons with beautiful patterns and gave them as gifts to women to show love and affection. Today they are popular decorative souvenirs.

Northern Ireland is on the island of Ireland, separate from Great Britain. The capital is Belfast. It shares a land border with the Republic of Ireland.

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Belfast was one of the world's greatest shipbuilding cities. The most famous ship ever built there was the RMS Titanic, launched in 1912.

The Troubles
From the late 1960s to 1998, Northern Ireland experienced a very difficult period of conflict between communities. The 1998 Good Friday Agreement brought peace.

Ancient History
Northern Ireland has some of Europe's oldest historical sites. Navan Fort near Armagh was the ancient capital of Ulster, going back 4,000 years.

The Causeway Coast
The north coast is dramatic and beautiful — high white cliffs, cold dark sea, and the world-famous Giant's Causeway. The scenery was also used for filming Game of Thrones.

The largest lake in the UK and Ireland. It is so big that it looks more like a small sea than a lake. Five counties of Northern Ireland surround it.

The Green Countryside
Northern Ireland is extremely green because it rains a lot. It has beautiful rolling hills, quiet valleys, and small villages with very few tourists compared to the rest of the UK.

St Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland and Northern Ireland. His day is celebrated on 17th March with music, dancing, and wearing green. It is a public holiday in Northern Ireland.

Northern Ireland has a rich tradition of folk music, played in pubs with fiddles, tin whistles, and bodhráns (drums). The music is closely connected to the Irish tradition.

Ulster Fry
The Ulster Fry is Northern Ireland's famous breakfast. It includes eggs, bacon, sausages, toast, and — uniquely — soda bread and potato bread. It is considered a national dish.
