Grammar Lab

Three grammar topics in one page. Read each explanation, then complete both exercises before scrolling to the next section.

A. The Imperative

We use the imperative to give commands, instructions, and suggestions.
There is no subject — you never say "You open the door." You just say "Open the door!"
✅ Positive — Base Verb
  • Open the door.
  • Turn left at the corner.
  • Please sit down.
🚫 Negative — Don't + Base Verb
  • Don't smoke in here.
  • Don't be late.
  • Don't forget your keys.
💡 Let's — suggestions that include the speaker
  • Let's go to the park. (= you and I, together)
  • Let's not talk about work tonight.
🟢 A1 — Easy: Choose the correct option
🔴 A2 — Hard: Type the correct imperative

B. Word Order: S–V–O–P–T

English sentences follow a strict order: Subject → Verb → Object → Place → Time.
You cannot move these elements around freely the way you can in Bulgarian.
SubjectVerbObjectPlaceTime
Idrinkcoffeeat homeevery morning.
ShemetBobin Londonyesterday.
WestudyEnglishonlineon Mondays.
Tomparkedhis carnear the officethis morning.
⚠️ Adverbs of Frequency (always, usually, often, never…)
  • With most verbs — put them before the verb: I always walk to school.
  • With to be — put them after: She is always late.
🟢 B1 — Easy: Choose the correct sentence
🔴 B2 — Hard: Write the sentence in the correct order

C. Tag Questions

Tag questions are short questions added to the end of a statement. We use them to check information or invite agreement.

The Golden Rule: Positive statement → Negative tag  |  Negative statement → Positive tag.
To Be (am / is / are)
  • It is cold, isn't it?
  • You aren't tired, are you?
  • I am late, aren't I? (exception!)
Present Simple (do / does)
  • You like pizza, don't you?
  • She works here, doesn't she?
  • He doesn't know, does he?
Past Simple & Modal Verbs
  • You went to London, didn't you?
  • He can drive, can't he?
  • We must leave, mustn't we?
  • They couldn't come, could they?
🟢 C1 — Easy: Choose the correct tag
🔴 C2 — Hard: Write the correct tag question ending

Reading

Read each text carefully, then answer the three questions below it. The texts are at a near-A2 level.

Text 1 — An Important Notice

To all staff,

Please remember that our office opens at eight-thirty every morning. Don't arrive later than nine o'clock without calling first. If you are going to be late, please send me a message immediately so I can confirm the arrangement.

The meeting room is on the second floor. Always sign the visitor book when you bring a guest to the building, and don't let anyone in without checking their name on the list first. This is a safety rule and it applies to everyone.

We have an important meeting with a new client on Thursday morning. Please confirm your attendance by Wednesday afternoon. Let's make a good impression — be polite, be prepared, and don't forget to bring your notes and any relevant documents.

Thank you for your understanding,
Ms Parker, Office Manager

Text 2 — A Saturday in Town

Every Saturday, Dan and his sister Laura go into town together. They usually take the bus because parking in the city centre is always very difficult and expensive. Dan doesn't enjoy shopping very much, but Laura loves it and usually spends a long time in every shop.

They always start at the outdoor market near the old library. Laura buys fresh fruit and vegetables there, and Dan often gets a coffee from the small café next to it. After that, they walk along the high street and look in the shop windows.

Last Saturday was different. It was raining heavily all morning, so they decided not to go to the market. Instead, they had lunch at an Italian restaurant on Bridge Street. Dan ordered pasta and Laura had a pizza. They stayed for almost two hours and talked about their plans for the summer. By the time they finally left, the rain had stopped and the sky was clear.
