Past Continuous — complete reference: form, usage, and contrast with Past Simple.

Part 1 — Structure of the Past Continuous

We form the Past Continuous with was / were + verb-ing. Use was with I / he / she / it and were with you / we / they. The negative uses was not (wasn't) or were not (weren't).

✅ Affirmative — Subject + was/were + verb-ing
Subjectwas / wereverb-ingExample
I / He / She / ItwasworkingShe was working the night shift.
You / We / TheyweretreatingThey were treating the patient when I arrived.
❌ Negative — Subject + wasn't/weren't + verb-ing
Subjectwasn't / weren'tverb-ingExample
I / He / She / Itwasn'tlisteningHe wasn't listening during the meeting.
You / We / Theyweren'tworkingThey weren't working — they were on strike.
Short answers: "Was she working?" → "Yes, she was." / "No, she wasn't."
❓ Questions — Was/Were + subject + verb-ing?
Was/WereSubjectverb-ingExample
WassheoperatingWas she operating the machine?
WeretheynegotiatingWere they negotiating a contract?
What washedoingWhat was he doing at the time?

4. (Affirmative) She / serve / customers / all morning.

Part 2 — Uses of the Past Continuous

The Past Continuous is used in several specific situations. Understanding why we use it helps you choose correctly between Past Simple and Past Continuous.

🔵 Action in Progress

  • Something was happening at a specific moment in the past
  • Often with: at 8pm, at that moment, at midnight
At 10pm, she was operating on a patient.
This morning at 7, he was driving to work.

🟡 Background Action

  • Sets the scene — something was already happening when something else occurred
  • The ongoing action = Past Continuous
She was treating a patient when the fire alarm went off.

🟢 Two Parallel Actions

  • Two things happening at the same time in the past
  • Used with while
While he was repairing the pipes, she was cooking lunch.
Time expressions for Past Continuous: at 6pm, at that moment, all morning, all day, all night, while, when (for the ongoing action)
at [time] yesterday at that moment all morning / all day while … when [something happened]
📝 Easy: Choose the correct reason why the Past Continuous is used in each sentence.
1. "At 11pm, the lawyer was still writing the report." — Why Past Continuous?
2. "She was examining a patient when her phone rang." — Why Past Continuous?
3. "While the engineer was repairing the machine, the supervisor was watching." — Why Past Continuous?
4. "At 7 this morning, the chef was already preparing breakfast." — Why Past Continuous?
🎯 Harder: Complete the sentences with the Past Continuous form of the verb.
1. All day yesterday, the accountants ___ (check) the annual figures.
2. At midnight, the nurse ___ (still / take) blood pressure readings.
3. While the chef ___ (prepare) dinner, the receptionist ___ (answer) calls.
4. At 9am this morning, the architects ___ (present) their new design to the client.
5. The plumber ___ (not / work) this morning — he called in sick.

Part 3 — Past Continuous vs Past Simple

This is one of the most important distinctions at A2 level. The key question is: was the action in progress (Past Continuous) or completed (Past Simple)?

TenseMeaningSignal WordsExample
Past Continuous Action in progress — ongoing, not finished at that moment while, at that moment, all day, at 6pm She was writing the report when I called.
Past Simple Completed action — finished, a single event in the past yesterday, last week, in 2019, then, suddenly The fire alarm went off. She stopped writing.
Classic pattern — when:
[Past Continuous — background action] + when + [Past Simple — short interrupting event]
He was repairing the car when it started to rain.
✅ She was treating a patient when the doctor arrived. (ongoing → interrupted)
While he was designing the building, she was checking the budget. (two ongoing)
She treated a patient when the doctor was arriving.
While he designed the building, she checked the budget.
📝 Easy: Choose Past Simple or Past Continuous for each gap.
1. The journalist ___ (write) her article when her laptop crashed.
2. The fire alarm ___ (go off) at exactly 3pm.
3. While the nurse ___ (check) the temperature, the patient fell asleep.
4. The electrician ___ (fix) the fuse and then left.
5. They ___ (negotiate) all afternoon when the other company finally agreed.
🎯 Harder: Each sentence uses the WRONG tense. Write the corrected version.
1. "The doctor treated the patient when the nurse entered." (ongoing action, then interrupted)
2. "The engineer was repairing the machine and then went home." (two completed, sequential actions)
3. "While she was designing, he checked the figures." (two simultaneous actions — both ongoing)
4. "She was arriving at the hospital at 7am." (a single, completed arrival event)
5. "He negotiated the contract for three hours when the phone suddenly rang." (long ongoing action, then interruption)

Part 4 — While vs When

While and when are both used to connect two past actions, but they have different patterns. Getting this right separates A2 from B1 learners.

🔵 WHILE + Past Continuous

  • Introduces the longer, ongoing background action
  • Always followed by Past Continuous
  • Can also link two ongoing actions
While she was working, he was sleeping.
While the chef was cooking, the fire alarm went off.

🟡 WHEN + Past Simple

  • Introduces the shorter, completed interrupting event
  • Often followed by Past Simple
  • Can also start a sentence
She was working when the fire alarm went off.
When the client arrived, they were waiting.
While the nurse was taking notes, the doctor examined the patient.
✅ The lawyer was reading the contract when her client called.
While the nurse took notes, the doctor was examining.
She was working when the manager was arriving.
📝 Easy: Choose the correct conjunction — while or when.
1. ___ the plumber was fixing the pipe, the owner watched.
2. The accountant was checking the figures ___ her manager called.
3. ___ the firefighters arrived, the building was still burning.
4. ___ she was negotiating, her colleague was preparing the documents.
5. The nurse was writing her report ___ the night shift ended.
🎯 Harder: Join the two events into one sentence using when or while as instructed.
1. She was operating the machinery. → The power cut out. (use when)
2. He was designing the building. → She was calculating the costs. (use while)
3. They arrived at the clinic. → The doctor was already treating the first patient. (use when)
4. The journalist was interviewing the minister. → Her recorder stopped working. (use when)
5. The receptionist was answering calls. → The chef was preparing lunch. (use while)

Text 1: A Busy Night at the Hospital

Last Thursday was one of the busiest nights Dr Elena Petrov had ever experienced at City General Hospital. At 11pm, she was treating her fourth patient of the shift when the emergency team called her to A&E. Two nurses were preparing a room while a third was monitoring a patient in intensive care. The situation was difficult. While the doctors were operating in theatre, the rest of the ward was short-staffed. The receptionist was managing phone calls and directing visitors at the same time. "Everyone was working incredibly hard," Dr Petrov said afterwards. At 3am, things finally calmed down. Dr Petrov wrote her report while the junior doctors were finishing their rounds. She left the hospital at 6am, just as the morning shift was arriving.

Text 2: The Architect and the Deadline

At 7am last Monday, the team at Sova Architecture was already hard at work. The lead architect, Marco, was reviewing the final blueprints when his phone rang. His client was calling to say the deadline had moved forward by two weeks. While Marco was speaking on the phone, his two engineers were already updating the structural calculations. The project manager was sending urgent emails to suppliers. "Everyone was doing something different, but we all knew what was at stake," Marco said later. By midday, the team had a new plan. Marco negotiated a short extension with the client — they agreed on an extra three days. While the engineers were making the last changes, Marco sat down and wrote a clear update to all involved parties. The project was difficult, but the team did not give up.

Questions:

1. What was Marco doing when his phone rang?
