Use a or an when you introduce something for the first time, or when it is one of many — not a specific one the listener knows. A is used before a consonant sound. An is used before a vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u). The rule is about the sound, not the spelling.
Use the when both the speaker and the listener know which specific thing is meant. This happens in four main situations: second mention, unique things, things identified by context, and superlatives.
| Situation | Rule | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Second mention | Already introduced — both sides know it | I saw a dog. The dog was huge. |
| Unique things | Only one exists in the world / context | The sun, the moon, the sky, the internet |
| Shared context | Both speaker and listener know which one | Can you close the window? (the one in this room) |
| Superlatives | Always use the with best/biggest etc. | It's the best restaurant in town. |
| Specific groups | A noun made specific by a phrase after it | The book on the table is mine. |
Sometimes English uses no article at all. This is called the zero article (Ø). It is used for general statements about uncountable or plural nouns, languages, meals, sports, proper nouns, and certain fixed expressions.
The most fundamental article rule in English is the first mention / second mention pattern. The first time you introduce something, use a/an. Every time you refer to the same specific thing again, use the. This pattern mirrors how Bulgarian uses the indefinite (no article) vs definite (-та/-то/-ят) forms.
| Mention | Article | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 1st mention — new information | a / an | I live in a small flat. |
| 2nd mention — known information | the | The flat has a great view. |
| 1st mention | a / an | She has a dog and a cat. |
| 2nd mention | the | The dog is old. The cat is young. |
Because Bulgarian uses postfix articles and handles certain nouns differently, Bulgarian speakers make predictable article errors in English. These are the most frequent mistakes — learn them and avoid them.
| ❌ Common mistake | ✅ Correct English | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Life is beautiful. | General concept → zero article | |
| She is a doctor. | Job = one of many → a/an | |
| I play football. | Sports → zero article | |
| I speak English. | Languages → zero article | |
| He went home. / He is at home. | Fixed expression → no article | |
| I had dinner at 8. | Meals → zero article | |
| Love is important. | Abstract concepts → zero article | |
| I went to school. | Purpose → zero article (see Part 6) |
With places like school, hospital, prison, church, university, bed — the article you use changes the meaning entirely. Without an article (zero article), we mean the institution's purpose. With the, we mean the physical building.
| Zero article (purpose) | The + noun (physical building) |
|---|---|
| She goes to school. (she is a student) | I drove to the school to pick up my child. |
| He is in hospital. (he is a patient — British English) | The ambulance arrived at the hospital. |
| She is at university. (she is a student) | He works at the university. (the specific building) |
| They are in prison. (they are prisoners) | The journalists gathered outside the prison. |
| I go to bed at 10. (to sleep) | The cat is on the bed. (the furniture) |
Maria is a young woman from Bulgaria. Last year, she moved to London to start a new life. She found a flat in the east of the city. The flat is small but comfortable. On her first morning, she went to a supermarket near her building. The supermarket had everything she needed. She bought a newspaper, an umbrella, and some coffee. That evening, she sat by the window and watched the sun go down. She thought: "Life is strange. Yesterday I was at home in Sofia. Today I am in the biggest city in England."
1. Why does the author write "a flat" the first time and "The flat" the second time?
2. "She watched the sun go down." Why is the used with sun?
3. "Life is strange." Why is there no article before life? (Language focus)
4. What can we infer about Maria's emotional state at the end of the text? (Inference)
Maria is a doctor. She got a job at a hospital in north London. The hospital is one of the biggest in England. On her first day, she met an interesting colleague — a man called Dr. Ellis. He is an experienced surgeon who studied at a famous university in the United States. The university was in New York. Every morning, Maria has breakfast at home, then travels to work by tube. She speaks English very well — she studied the language for ten years in Bulgaria. Her colleagues say she is the best doctor in the department.
1. "Maria is a doctor." Why is a used here, not the?
2. "she travels to work by tube" — which word has zero article (Ø) and why? (Language focus)
3. "she is the best doctor in the department" — why is the used? (Language focus)
4. What impression do we get of Dr. Ellis from the text? (Inference)
One weekend, Maria took a train to Edinburgh. The journey took about four hours. Edinburgh is a beautiful city in Scotland. She visited the castle, walked along the famous Royal Mile, and had lunch in a small café. The café had a wonderful view of the old town. She also went to the National Museum of Scotland. The museum was free to enter. Inside, she saw an ancient map of Europe. The map showed how the continent looked five hundred years ago. Maria thought it was the most interesting thing she had ever seen in a museum.
1. "She had lunch in a small café." Why a?
2. "She had lunch" — no article before lunch. Why? (Language focus)
3. "she saw an ancient map... The map showed how..." — why does the article change? (Language focus)
4. What does the final sentence tell us about Maria? (Inference)
